Ordering an Icon
Information on Ordering an Icon
The Icon that you order is a piece that will last longer than a lifetime. The materials used resist cracking, fading and other deterioration, even to a higher degree than the properties of oil paints.
Many people choose the subject of their Icon based upon favorite, Confirmation or namesake Saints. Others choose classic images of the Theotokos or of Christ. Another favorite topic is the Feasts of the Church. There are innumerable subjects from which to choose. If you have only a general idea of the subject which you seek please contact me and I will send you samples that can assist you in narrowing down your choices.
Icons are available in a number of sizes. The size and the complexity of the Icon (such as multiple subjects within the scene) are factors considered when I provide you with the price for your proposed project. A typical Icon takes 4 to 16 weeks, depending upon complexity, size and the possible backlog of orders. I will provide you with a timeline at the same time that I provide the price.
There are factors to be considered in regard to certain material choices that are reflected in the price. I write my Icons on traditional gesso jointed panels, or on Ampersand Clayboard, which is an economical and yet extremely stable surface. Prices are also higher when you choose the traditional gilding using 24 carat gold leaf upon a bole sizing. An economical and acceptable effect can be obtained using copper-based gold leaf. Silver leaf is also available for a different look. I do not feel that the more economical materials in any way diminish the beautiful appearance of the Icon. These methods can allow you to own a unique and lasting spiritual piece that might not be affordable under other circumstances.
Please consider calling or e-mailing me if you have any questions about my work or if you would like to discuss an order.
